The 1850 Liberty Seated Dime graded PCGS XF-45 with a “pinch” pedigree from the SS Central America represents a survivor of one of the most famous shipwreck hoards in numismatics. Within PCGS records, 426 examples are certified at the XF45 level (with a pinch designation), while 303 coins are graded finer, underscoring how conditionally elusive this issue is in high preservation. From the famed SS Central America recovery alone, a total of 954 dimes from the 1850 issue were brought back into the numismatic market. The 1850 mintage of 1,931,500 pieces came during a period shaped by the California Gold Rush, when shifting precious metal dynamics influenced circulation patterns. As silver prices gradually strengthened relative to face value, these dimes were widely hoarded and often melted for bullion, leaving far fewer survivors in collectible condition today.Across both PCGS and NGC populations, a combined total of 1,422 examples have been graded, equating to just 0.073 percent of the original mintage, a striking indicator of its surviving scarcity.
