Philip V "Princess Louisa" Cob 8 Reales 1727 L-M XF (Shipwreck Effect), Lima mint, KM34a, Cal-1300. 25.20gm. Accompanied by COA. Salvaged from the "Princess Louisa" Shipwreck (sunk in 1743 off the Cape Verde Islands). The Princess Louisa was a sizeable British merchant ship sailing for the East India Company in the early 1700s. She was on her fourth voyage to the East when she ran aground on a reef near Isla de Maio in the Cape Verde Islands in 1743. Despite rescue efforts by another in the fleet, no rescue attempt was successful, though forty men did manage to make their way to shore and find their way home. Whatever they managed to bring to shore was looted by the islanders, leaving the cargo to rest on the seafloor. The ship was carrying textiles and mixed cargo for the Bombay market along with 69,760 ounces of silver in Spanish and Spanish American pieces-of-eight contained in twenty chests. The ship's husband sent a galley and a sloop to salvage what they could from the wreckage, but it was an unsuccessful venture as one was seized by the French.
