1596 Medal American Commerce, Silver, Betts-16, XF45 PCGS. Rose and russet dominate light-silver surfaces. From 1568 to 1648, the Netherlands fought a war for Independence from Spain. However, by 1581, the heartland of the Netherlands was secure enough from Spanish aggression that it could reestablish foreign trade routes, which this medal celebrates. However, it does not have any connection to the New World. The mention of St. Thomas in the Van Loon reference, Betts' source for information on this medal, refers not to the Caribbean island, but rather the modern-day Sao Tome, which was known as St. Thomas at the time.
