(1631) Medal Pernambuco, Silver, Betts-31, AU58 PCGS. 68.6mm, 60.7 grams. The Betts-31 Pernambuco medals were made to commemorate the achievement of Dutch Admiral Piet Hein's triumphant apprehension of the Spanish silver fleet. This former museum piece displays Roman-silver luster, with hints of deeper gray material around the devices. The medal is free from any denigrating marks, and a small inner ring divot near the obverse plume serves as a pedigree marker. This is only our second time offering a Betts-31 medal in a decade, the other offered in 2023 was also an AU58 tying the two as the finest and only examples reported by PCGS (6/26). While traditionally identified as Betts-31, this variety is denoted Betts-30B in the new companion book by Christopher McDowell.
