(1659) 6PENCE Lord Baltimore Sixpence, H. 2-C, W-1060, R.5, AU53 NGC. The 1659 Maryland sixpence belonged to a private coinage issued by Cecil Calvert, the second Lord of Baltimore, under his assumed royal charter in part to stabilize the Maryland agrarian dependent economy. His assumption proved incorrect, however, and following a brief stint of coinage, Calvert was arrested, having the tools and the remaining coins seized. A few coins escaped destruction and have since emerged with the most notable hoard of 19 examples sold at a Morton & Eden auction in 2002. This example displays deep gray as well as pewter tones. The strike is largely pleasing with excellent sharpness along the hair. A few marks are present with a diagonal abrasion within the rightmost shield stripes as well as a tiny divot behind the lord's head serving as pedigree markers. The issue is scarce in all varieties and is scarcely seen in About Uncirculated, like the present piece. Listed on page 10 of the 2026 Guide Book. Ex: The Atlanta Signature Sale (Heritage, 8/2001), lot 5015; Ross Family Collection / Global Showcase (Stack's Bowers, 11/2024), lot 1137. HID06601242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
