1797 1C Reverse of 1797, Stems, S-123, B-12, R.4, MS63 Brown PCGS. Breen Die State III. A crack connects the E in ONE to the T in CENT, and another extends downward into the field from the upper serif of the F in OF. Small marks below Liberty’s eye are a feature of the obverse die that are seen on all survivors from the S-123 die pair. The obverse is plated in Dr. William H. Sheldon’s Early American Cents and Penny Whimsy. The reverse die is the same as that of 1796 S-119 and seen here in an earlier die state. In 1952 Walter Breen wrote that Benjamin Goodhue acquired a "Mint Sample" of 1796-1797 cents in the latter year and that he was the grandfather of Mrs. Nichols. Goodhue was not the grandfather of Martha (Proctor) Nichols, but they were related. Her paternal grandmother was Hannah Goodhue, the sister of Senator Benjamin Goodhue. The smooth and glossy chestnut-brown surfaces exhibit reddish patina with wisps of lavender and green. Sharp border dentils frame intricately defined central details. Darker toning spots below the I in LIBERTY and over the first 7 in the date confirm the provenance of this outstanding coin. Ex: Howard R. Newcomb (J.C. Morgenthau, 1/1945), lot 141; T. James Clarke (1949); Dr. William H. Sheldon; R.E. Naftzger, Jr. (New Netherlands, 11/1973), lot 439; R. Tettenhorst (Bernard Edison); later, Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 9/2017), lot 3728; US Coins Signature (Heritage, 12/2022), lot 3293. HID06601242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
