Preliminary Reverse Sketch for the Standing Liberty Quarter. NGC. Paper: 6 x 7.75 in. Sketch: 5.5 in. diameter. When we handled this sketch in October 2025, it was part of a larger paper that had two preliminary sketches for the Standing Liberty quarter reverse. We offered the entire joint work in its original form as it came from MacNeil's studio. As evidenced by the current offering, the sketches have since been cut apart and the paper trimmed down to fit inside an NGC sleeve. This sketch (along with the other no longer present) was among those sample designs shown to Mint Director Woolley in March 1916, as proposed revisions to MacNeil's original reverse design, which was rejected. Following the design contest for the dime, quarter, and half dollar, Hermon MacNeil's models were initially only accepted for the obverse of the quarter, but the Commission of Fine Arts urged Woolley to allow the sculptor an opportunity to revise his reverse design. The sketch presented here came about as a result of the Commission's recommendation. This sketch was saved from MacNeil's studio in 1947, by John A. Coughlin, and afterward went into the vast holdings of Eric P. Newman by the early 1960s. They were among those sketches plated in Don Taxay's The U.S. Mint and Coinage, and more recently in Roger W. Burdette's Renaissance of American Coinage, 1916-1921. Additional examples of MacNeil's reverse design revision sketches were presented in our August 2016 ANA Signature. The present sketch was not among the core group at the time but was more recently rediscovered after peripheral Newman files were explored by numismatic scholars.
