1559 Medal Peace of Cambrai, Silver, Betts-3, AU55 PCGS. 40.4 mm, 3.3 mm thick at lower rim, 42.7 gm. Medal turn. By Gianpaolo Poggini, with the artist's signature below the truncation of the high-relief armored bust of Philip II, facing left in a circle. The reverse shows a standing draped figure of Peace holding a cornucopia as she ignites a pile of discarded weapons before the closed Temple of Janus. This is surrounded by the Latin legend Peace Established on Land and Sea, with the Roman numeral date MDLIX (1559) in exergue.      This medal, struck to mark the Peace of Cambrai between France and Spain, declares Spanish King Philip II as HISPANIAR ET NOVA ORBIS OCCIDVI REX, or "King of Spain and the new Western world," earning this medal a spot in the Betts book. While Spain's colonization of the New World was just getting underway, Philip's declaration as King of the New World this early represents an important development in relations between the European powers at the time.      The present offering, which hails from our sale of the John W. Adams collection, is one of five known examples of Betts-3 in silver. Of this group, just three are available to collectors, with the other two examples permanently impounded in the British Museum and the ANS. In addition to this example, another was offered as lot 661 in John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part XIII and reappeared in a 2012 Stacks Bowers auction. Each sale suggested that the example offered was the only one known, but plate matching reveals two distinct survivors. The third is a recent discovery, appearing in a 2024 Kuenker auction. Ex: Morton & Eden (4/2002), lot 643; The John W. Adams Collection / FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2013), lot 3547. From The Costa Family Collection, Part III.
