1602 Medal New World Rivalry, Silver, Betts-21, Van Loon I-548, AU50 PCGS. 52mm. Betts-21 promotes Dutch efforts in their rivalry with the Spanish and Portuguese for authority over coastal towns in the West Indies and Brazil. This is best captured via the reverse legend, NON SVFFICIT ORBIS QVO SALTAS INSEQVAR, which translates to, "The world is not so big that where you go I cannot follow," showing that the Dutch can win the military victories needed to become an important South American power. This legend surrounds a depiction of these successes, showing Dutch warships outmaneuvering the Spanish galleon San Iago off St. Helena in 1601. On the reverse, the lion of Dutch Zeeland closely pursues Spanish King Phillip II's jump into the New World. This commanding Betts medal possesses a very strong connection to New World history and represents an excellent cabinet piece.
