1629 Medal Matanzas, Silver, Betts-24, AU55 PCGS. 58.6mm, 2.4mm thick, 56.1 grams. The Dutch capture of the Spanish silver fleet was a magnanimous feather in the cap of Admiral Piet Hein and which earned the Dutch an astonishing 177,000 pounds worth of silver as well as other rich treasures. The Betts-24 as well as Betts-25 medals illustrate the Dutch naval force composed of 19 ships and five launches from them entering the Matanzas Bay below a broken line of hills, surrounded by a mocking Latin legend calling the Spaniards less formidable with the sword than they are with gold. The present piece displays alluring deep pewter-gray and is largely free from any marks that would denigrate it. While not the only medal available in public hands for collectors, this is the sole Betts-24 seen by PCGS. This example will be the first time we have had the opportunity to offer a Betts-24 medal in over a decade, including this particular medal.
