1670 Medal British Colonization, Gold, Betts-44 -- Rim Damage -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. 41.6 mm, 57.6 grams, specific gravity 18.58 (96.3% gold). By Charles Roettier. Warm honey-gold surfaces bear a few marks. The edge is somewhat rough and shows a couple of rim bumps. The obverse of this stunning medal depicts conjoined busts of King Charles II and his bride, Catherine of Braganza. Their marriage was destined for conflict due to her steadfast, deep adherence to the Catholic faith. This made her a constant target in England, where the Anglican church barred the participation of Catholics. The reverse displays a world globe displaying much of the Western hemisphere along with Europe, Africa, and Asia, surrounded by the Latin legend DIFFVSVS · IN · ORBE · BRITANNVS · 1670 ·, which translates to, "The Briton is Dispersed throughout the Globe." This is the earliest collectible gold Betts medal, although with a population of just two traced examples, it is of course still not very collectible. The present offering traces its pedigree to the John W. Adams collection, and the other example hails from the Syd Martin. This represents a paramount opportunity to the specialist.
