Undated 1/2 P London Elephant Token, LON DON, AU55 PCGS. Betts-82, Hodder 2-D, W-12060, High R.6. Nearly 40 years ago, Michael Hodder examined all the Elephant tokens in the Norweb Collection and created special variety labels that remain in use today. The present piece is one of the Norweb coins that Hodder examined when he created his variety guide, and it is generally thought to be the second finest known behind the Mint State Roper Collection coin that has never been certified, to the best of our knowledge. The quality of this Choice AU example matches its important provenance. The outstanding medium brown, olive, and mahogany surfaces show trivial pits that remain from the cast planchet used for these pieces. The surfaces have no marks of significance. The strike is nicely centered with bold dentils from 12 o'clock to 8:30 on the obverse and 5 o'clock to 10 o'clock on the reverse. This example is tied with one other for the finest of eight LON DON Elephant tokens that PCGS has numerically certified (7/26). The other six submissions are graded XF40 (2), VF35, VF25, F12, and VG8. PCGS has examined a few others with Details grades. NGC reports certification of two submissions graded XF Details and VF30.
