1793 1/2 C C-3, B-3, R.3, AU58 PCGS. The usual die state with a perfect obverse die and a lightly rusted reverse die. This is the third of four varieties of 1793 half cents coined in Philadelphia during the summer of 1793. The first delivery of half cents was dated July 20, and the final delivery was dated September 18. One other delivery between those was dated July 26. Production totaled 35,334 half cents from the four die combinations, mating two obverse dies and three reverse dies. There are no specific records of the number of coins struck per die marriage, although the original mintage is likely in a similar proportion to the number that survive today. The first variety is slightly rarer than the other three, and about 1,300 1793 half cents survive from all four die marriages, based on rarity ratings. Most are in low grade and/or damaged. Walter Breen recorded six Mint State examples in the Condition Census for this die marriage. Possibly as many as a dozen AU examples survive, including this piece. This lovely example has smooth golden-brown, chocolate, and steel toning blended across both surfaces. There is no evidence of corrosion or other imperfections aside from trivial rim bruises outside the beaded border on the reverse. The strike is well-centered with full border beads on both sides. An exceptional example for an advanced half cent specialist or type coin collector. Ex: The Estate of S. Gus and Louise Alexander / Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2018), lot 4209.
