1796 1C Reverse of 1797, S-119, B-40, R.3, MS62 Brown PCGS. Breen Die State III. An obverse die crack from the border below the 9 joins the bottoms of the 7 and 1 to the lowest curl, into the field nearly reaching the border at 7:30. Minor reverse rim breaks are visible over TAT in STATES. Three varieties, 1796 S-119 offered here, 1797 S-123, and 1797 S-135, are identified as "Nichols Find" varieties. All Mint State examples of those three varieties are usually attributed to the group of coins that David Nichols distributed circa 1860. Hints of mint luster in the protected areas of this lovely cent accompany chocolate-brown surfaces. Trivial flaws remain from the planchet prior to striking as usual for the variety. PCGS Population for all 1796 Reverse of 1797 varieties: 5 in 62 (1 in 62+) Brown, 12 finer (7/26). Ex: Andrew C. Zabriskie (Henry Chapman, 6/1909), lot 745; A.J. "Alvin" Fink; Henry O.
