1797 1C Reverse of 1797, Stems, S-135, B-5, R.3, MS65 Brown PCGS. CAC. Breen Die State IV or later, previously cataloged incorrectly as Die State III. In addition to the die chips over the C in AMERICA that Breen recorded for the State III coins, this example clearly shows bulges at D ST and faint clash marks below ES O, as described for State IV. Following the earlier research of R.W. Julian, Breen wrote that these Nichols Find varieties are on planchets imported from Matthew Boulton in England, and that they were all struck in November or December 1797. Like many or most of the high-grade 1796 and 1797 cents attributed to the Nichols Find, this example has splendid, virtually flawless surfaces with a nearly prooflike appearance. A small toning spot inside the obverse border at 9 o’clock and another inside the right branch of the wreath near the top of the E in ONE will identify this Gem cent and may point to an earlier provenance. A thin planchet marks left of the L in LIBERTY angles down into the upper hair. PCGS Population for all Reverse of 1797, Stems varieties: 12 in 65 (1 in 65+) Brown, 2 finer (7/26). Ex: James R.
