1796 10C JR-4, R.4, AU58 NGC. The scarce JR-4 dime shares its obverse with the JR-3 variety and its reverse with JR-5. The T and Y of LIBERTY touch at their top serifs. On the reverse, the JR-4 variety has two berries below the E in UNITED and a leaf tip below the right base of A in STATES. As a date, the 1796 Draped Bust dimes are readily available from a reported 22,135-piece mintage. Seven die pairs are known including the latest variety discovered (JR-7 in 2002). JR-4 is midlevel in rarity among 1796 dimes -- scarcer than JR-1, JR-2, and JR-6. Soft mint luster remains throughout the richly toned, original surfaces of this JR-4 example. Virtually no marks exist on the smooth and attractive lilac-gray fields while a touch of weakness on the eagle's breast and leg is at least as likely from the strike as it is from circulation wear. Liberty's hair strands and drapery folds are sharp, with silver luster among the curls. As usual, several right-hand stars are a bit rounded but the left-side stars are sharp.
