1814 10C Large Date, JR-3, R.2, MS67 NGC. Medium-gray surfaces contain hints of russet-brown, steel-blue, and faint rainbow hues. Minimal weakness is limited to the highest points of the design. Eye appeal is exquisite. Three distinct types exist for the 1814 dime, spanning five die marriages. The JR-1 has a Small Date, as compared to the Large Date on the other four die marriages. The JR-5 is further differentiated into its own type by the STATESOFAMERICA reverse, where those three words in the legend lack sufficient separation and appear to run together as one. This is tied for the finest known 1814 dime of any type according to the census published by Ron Guth in the December 8, 2019 issue of the John Reich Journal. No new examples have appeared in subsequent auctions that challenge that claim. Ex: Harold P. Newlin Collection; T. Harrison Garrett Collection; Robert Garrett Collection; John Work Garrett Collection; Johns Hopkins University Collection, Part III (Bowers & Ruddy, 10/1980), lot 1583 (as Raw MS65), $15,000; Greenhill Collection; (Goldbergs 9/2006), lot 1475, $27,600; Mark Gordon Collection; (Goldbergs, 5/2009), lot 450 (as NGC MS67), $19,550; Baltimore Sale (Bowers & Merena 3/2010), lot 609 (as NGC MS67), $19,550.
