1794 50C O-101a, T-7, R.3, VF35 PCGS. This is an attractive and fully natural example of the first half dollar issue from the early Philadelphia Mint. Both sides display moderately deep steel and gray-brown color with lighter gray on the devices. The surfaces are exceptional for the Choice VF grade, with few marks of any size. A die crack on the reverse between the D and first S is seen on nearly every known example from this reverse die, as well as a diagnostic and earlier radial die crack through F in OF. This O-101a example represents the most common die marriage of the year by far, and is accordingly an excellent choice for date or type collectors. The Choice original surfaces are boldly defined for the grade, including a strong 1794 date and well-defined wing feathers. PCGS Population (all 1794 varieties combined): 23 in 35, 27 finer (7/26).
