1801 50C O-101, T-2, R.2, AU58 NGC. Tompkins Die Stage 3/3. The 1801 half dollar is a key date in the Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle series, along with 1802. A relatively small mintage of 30,289 half dollars was coined in 1801. The O-101, T-2 die marriage was actually struck after O-102, T-1. Interesting die rust lumps are seen in several places on the lower reverse. Steve Tompkins speculated the reverse die of O-101, T-2 could possibly had been engraved earlier than 1801 because of the rust defects, which are found on all specimens. The 1801 half dollar becomes a sought-after rarity in AU and MS grades. This is an enchanting example of the popular 1801 Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle half dollar, beautifully engraved by Robert Scot. Colorful toning in hues of blue and gray with dashes of orange are displayed on the obverse, while the reverse embraces varying shades of gray, blue, and russet. The eye appeal is outstanding. Luster radiates through the toning in protected areas of the coin. Scattered light marks are seen on both sides, and a thin toned-over scratch is noted for accuracy from star 3 to curl on the obverse. The strike is good, and better than usually found for the design type. Well defined hair detail and drapery lines are displayed, while the reverse has sharp shield lines and a clear motto. Slight softness in the upper reverse stars and clouds are always seen on this variety. Overall, the presentation is excellent on this impressive 1801 half dollar, destined to become a prize for the next owner. From The Van Cleve Family Collection.
