1866 $2 1/2 Liberty Quarter Eagle, Judd-542, Pollock-607, High R.7, PR64 PCGS. CAC. The Judd-542 pattern is an off-metal version of the regular 1866 quarter eagle dies design, struck in nickel with a reeded edge. The purpose of this pattern is not clear. These pieces could have been deliberately produced for sale to collectors or perhaps they are simply mint error pieces struck on three-cent nickel planchets. While the three-cent nickel was introduced in 1865 and the planchet size is very close to the quarter eagle, it is unlikely that multiple examples of the same mint error were unintentionally struck. This example is identified as #4 on the Teichman Roster which is currently tracking only six Judd-542 coins, of which two are uncertified and are potentially duplicates (6/26).      Outstanding execution for the newly utilized and much harder metal earns endorsement from CAC with regards to quality for the grade. Luminous silver-nickel surfaces produce delightful eye appeal. A small lint mark at the base of Liberty's neck and a few microscopic contact marks are noted. Planchet striations running diagonally southwest to northeast produce a subtle effect which is neither overt nor distracting. This rare Choice proof is housed in a PCGS generation 1.2 "Rattler" holder. HID06601242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
