1867 G$1 Gold Dollar, Judd-594, Pollock-658, R.7, PR65 Brown NGC. CAC. The regular dies from an 1867 gold dollar used on a trial piece. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. The J-594 patterns were likely struck for sale to collectors as part of complete sets, of which only four copper sets have been confirmed. The Teichman Roster tracks five J-594 examples on the Roster and identifies this specimen as item #1 from the four sets. Teichman's uspatterns.com notes that two coins were stolen and one has gone untraced since 1914. NGC reports this J-594 as the sole certification in Brown alongside only one other example in PR65 Red and Brown. while PCGS only reports a lone PR64 in Brown (6/26). This well-pedigreed and exceedingly rare Gem proof is an attractive copper rendering of the contemporaneous gold dollar. Satiny surfaces display cocoa-brown patina and occasional flashes of original mint copper. Lavender and ice-blue accents are seen on the semireflective fields and subtle iridescence emerges beneath light. A faint diagonal luster graze off of Liberty's nose points northwest and serves as a pedigree marker. A few microscopic carbon spots exist but they are of minor significance. This exceptional J-594 is the only CAC-approved example and it comes housed in an NGC generation 4 ‘fatty' holder. CAC: 1 in 65, 0 finer (6/26). Ex: The Charles B. Britton Collection (Cogan through Bangs, 1/1883), part of lot 406; The John Work Garrett Collection / The Johns Hopkins University (Stack's, 3/1976), lot 678; The Beebe Collection / ANA Convention (Bowers and Merena, 8/1987), lot 1489; The Jascha Heifetz Collection (Superior, 10/1989), lot 3355; October 7-9, 1990 Sale (Superior, 10/1990), lot 1912.
