1796 $2 1/2 Stars on Obverse, BD-3, High R.5 -- Repaired -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b, with a die crack running from Star 1 through Star 8. The introductory two and a half dollar gold denomination in 1796 (BD-1 and BD-2) lacked obverse stars. The first and only 1796 variety to include obverse stars is the BD-3, which added eight stars on each side. The Guide Book mintage reflects only 432 pieces struck for the BD-3, and today it is estimated that less than 50 BD-3 quarter eagles are extant. This green-gold example displays satiny surfaces that flash delicate hues of peach on the high points. The motifs are well-detailed and reflect circulation wear consistent with AU-level pieces. Minor marks are distributed, though a thin pinscratch along Liberty's cheek and a small dig between the arrowheads and the eagle's left (facing) wing merit mention. Luster is moderately diminished from a past cleaning and light repairs are noted, especially along the upper reverse periphery. The overall eye appeal remains strong for this rare With Obverse Stars early quarter eagle variety. HID06601242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
