1797 $2 1/2 BD-1, High R.5, VF35 PCGS. CAC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/a. Yellow-gold in the fields mixes with white-gold on the devices and russet-gold in the peripheral protected areas to create a sumptuous patina. Minor abrasions exist in the obverse field, but their minimal effect causes them to fade into the background. Only 427 quarter eagles were minted in 1797, the lowest mintage in a series defined by sparse production figures. The year's sole die marriage is today rated High R.5, suggesting a survival rate of a bit less than 10%. The present offering is an example of Die State b/a, as are all but one example of this issue, which has a massive obverse cud covering stars 8 through 12. The prime die state is unknown.
