1879 $4 Flowing Hair, Judd-1635, Pollock-1833, JD-1, R.3 -- Repaired -- PCGS Genuine. Proof, XF Details. The tedious and complicated calculations required for proper international exchange rates prompted the Mint's investigation into a gold denomination that would most closely provide an easy exchange value, while conforming to domestic standards and popular foreign metric equivalents. The four dollar stella was conceived as America's answer to foreign gold such as the Austrian 8 florin gold coins, the British sovereign, Italy's 20 lire, and Spain's 20 pesetas. The proposed gold coin was called the stella -- valued at $4.00 when struck in goloid metal -- and it was nearly the financial equivalent of those popular gold coins in the international market. The idea was championed by John A. Kasson, who was the United States Minister to Austria in 1879 and who previously was the Chairman of the Congressional Committee on Coinage, and Dr. Wheeler W. Rich harvest-gold color remains throughout the obverse and the reverse, with both sides somewhat glossy in appearance. The proof XF sharpness includes smooth wear at the central hair strands while the peripheries and reverse devices are sharper. A shallow flat area exists on the obverse rim above 7 S G.
