1879 $4 Flowing Hair, Judd-1635, Pollock-1833, JD-1, R.3, PR65 Cameo PCGS. The 1879 Flowing Hair Stella, representing one of the nation's most ambitious international coinage experiments, ranks among the most celebrated pattern coins ever produced by the United States Mint. Authorized for congressional evaluation rather than circulation, the proposed four-dollar gold piece was designed to facilitate international trade while preserving the American decimal monetary system. The Stella reflected growing interest in monetary standardization during the late nineteenth century. Two designs were created using a common reverse die. The Flowing Hair design, as offered here, and the Coiled Hair design, are attributed to Charles E. Barber and George T. Morgan, respectively. Numismatic tradition suggests a mintage of 425 examples of the 1879 Flowing Hair Stella, 20 of the 1879 Coiled Hair, 35 of the 1880 Flowing Hair, and 10 of the 1880 Coiled Hair. In United States Proof Coins, Volume IV: Gold, John W. Dannreuther suggests that perhaps 15 examples of the 1879 Flowing Hair Stella were struck in 1879, and the remainder, possibly as many as 600, were minted in 1880 or later. Nearly vertical grooves on Liberty and the large reverse star are typical of most, or perhaps all surviving examples. The striae resulted from shaving or rolling down planchets intended for half eagles. This exceptional Gem Cameo proof features brilliant, mirrored honey-gold surfaces with excellent field-to-device contrast. Today, the 1879 Flowing Hair Stella is recognized as one of the premier trophies in American numismatics. Combining exceptional rarity, historical importance, and artistic distinction, it enjoys broad appeal among collectors of pattern coinage and classic United States gold. More than a century after its creation, the Flowing ...
