1795 $5 Small Eagle, S Over D, BD-6, R.5, AU58 PCGS. CAC. Bass Dannreuther Die State b/c. The 1795 BD-6 five dollar gold is a rare die marriage with an estimated 60 to 80 surviving specimens. Only one usage for the obverse die was on this variety, while the reverse die had previous usage on BD-5. Attribution of the obverse is from the flag of 5 being halfway over drapery, along with the tip of 1 free of curl. The reverse is identified with the last S in STATES over a previously punched D. An interesting feature of this die pairing are spikes from the end of certain dentils that were caused by the engraver's tool, with more on the reverse than the obverse, which serve as evidence that the dentils were finished with a pointed graver, rather than only being punched.      The year 1795 represents the first year of issue for the gold denominations of the half eagle and eagle, which had been proposed in the Coinage Act of 1792. Half eagles were the first to be struck, with 744 coins delivered per Warrant 1 on July 31, 1795. Scot explained his coinage engraving process with a report to Congress in January of 1795, where he described an "original die" for the central design was first engraved, which was next used to raise a "hubb" in relief that would then sink a number of working dies to "strike the money."      This is an exceptional example of the first year of issue half eagle, embraced with lovely antique gold toning that includes deeper olive and orange hues towards the borders. Only minor marks are observed on the surfaces from the coin's brief excursion in circulation. Sharply struck, and much better than usually encountered for the design type, with well formed stars, drapery lines, and hair detail, along with crisp definition on the eagle's wing and breast feathers. The coin is framed by full dentilation on ...
