1795 $5 Large Eagle, BD-14, High R.6, MS63 Prooflike NGC. Pleasingly original surfaces exude a deeply set, green-gold sheen throughout, highlighted by isolated blushes of rose tinting in a few areas over and around the central reverse. The impression is quite pleasing, with the only noteworthy softness confined to the central highpoints.      However, perhaps the most significant feature of this coin is its markedly prooflike finish. The fields are mirrored, suggesting an early impression from this press run, while the devices are more frosty in texture. Also, and interestingly for a business strike, an identifying lintmark (as struck) is seen on Liberty's cheek. The presence of this lintmark, as well as the prooflike finish, could mean that this coin was either the Menjou or Kern specimen, both of which were erroneously offered as proofs in 1950 (per David W. Akers, 1979).      Despite the presence of the date on the obverse, the 1795 Capped Bust Right, Heraldic Eagle Fives were not produced in 1795. Rather, these coins were produced in 1797 at the earliest, but more likely in 1798, perhaps as part of the 3,226 pieces delivered on December 5 of the latter year. Three die marriages were produced in what ranks as the third rarest issue in the Heraldic Eagle series of 1795-1807. The BD-13 is unique, where the BD-15 is the most "common" at 30 to 35 known, though such a coin can of course hardly be called common. In addition, this marvelous survivor is also a conditional rarity, with just three certifications by NGC and PCGS combined (4/26). Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 6/2004), lot 6240.
