1807 $5 Bust Left, BD-8, R.2, MS62+ PCGS. CAC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State d/b. A new design for the 1807 Capped Bust Left half eagle was introduced in mid-1807, along with the Capped Bust half dollar. The obverse portrait and reverse eagle were engraved by John Reich, who was employed as Assistant Engraver in April of 1807, reporting to Chief Engraver Robert Scot. The BD-8 die marriage is the second usage of the obverse die, and a new reverse die which is identified by the tip of a feather pointing to the tip of the flag of 5. This late die state has a fine obverse die crack at star 13, along with light die clash marks on both sides including above the date.      Rich yellow gold with highlights of orange and olive toning is a natural patina that is quite attractive, with lovely eye appeal. A loupe will reveal minor contact marks that are fewer than usually seen at this grade level. Fully struck with a great display of detail on the new design. Hair curls are nicely formed, and the reverse design elements of the eagle and shield have crisp definition. Extensive frosty luster on both sides adds to the appeal. Endorsement by CAC is well justified for this exceptional specimen of the first year issue Capped Bust Left five dollar design. Housed in a PCGS 30th Anniversary Holder.
