1839 $5 MS62+ NGC. The 1839 half eagle serves as the inaugural issue in Christian Gobrecht's Coronet or Liberty Head series. The portrait on the 1839 is also distinctly different from that used in 1840 and beyond, making it a popular single-year type. The Mint struck 118,143 examples, and while a few hundred survive, seldom are they seen in Mint State condition. This MS62 half eagle enjoys bright yellow-gold color and a hint of field reflectivity that merits the Plus-grade designation from NGC. Bold definition appears on the stars, hair strands, feathers, olive leaves, and talons. Hairlines and other tiny abrasions barely preclude an even higher grade. All Mint State grades are scarce, and NGC reports only 13 numerically finer examples. NGC Census: 1 in 62+, 13 finer (6/26). Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2021), lot 4641.
