1795 $10 13 Leaves, BD-1, High R.3, AU55 PCGS. Bass Dannreuther Die State c/b. The 1795 13 Leaves BD-1 die pairing is the very first gold eagle struck, determined from research by distinguished numismatists Harry Bass and John Dannreuther. The obverse is identified as stated by Bass "Tip of 5 overlaps bust base. Two lumps at top left of Y." The reverse has leaf virtually touching U of UNITED, along with a branch tip centered beneath A of AMERICA. This excellent specimen is in the late die state, with obverse cracks including all stars on the left, and several fine reverse die cracks through the legend. The ten dollar gold denomination was specified in the Coinage Act of 1792 and first struck in September of 1795, with a quantity of 1,097 eagles delivered on September 22, which are believed to include the BD-1 die marriage. Eagles were the second gold denomination minted, as half eagles were first delivered on July 31, 1795. Chief Engraver Robert Scot designed and skillfully engraved the beautiful Draped Bust, Small Eagle gold motif. Chief Coiner Henry Voigt supervised the setup of the screw press, which included the use of edge collar dies that would impress exactly 142 edge reeds on all ten dollar gold coins struck from 1795 until 1798, as researched by Anthony J. Taraszka. These early eagles are prized by numismatists for their beauty and historical importance. This exquisite example has lovely antique gold toning, with hues varying from deep yellow at the centers to shades of olive and orange towards the peripheries. Some very light adjustment marks can be seen at the center of the portrait, in back of the ear, but they do not detract from the wonderful eye appeal. Scattered minor grade-consistent marks on the obverse and reverse are from the coin's brief excursion into commerce.
