1796 $10 BD-1, R.4, AU55 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/b. A linear clash mark within the wreath top and a lengthy, vertical die crack through Liberty's portrait indicate a middle die state for this Choice About Uncirculated 1796 Small Eagle ten. The Guide Book mintage is 4,146 pieces, although it is likely that number is not exact, based on some 1796-dated coins being struck in 1797. Survival estimates for the 1796 and 1797 Small Eagle tens suggest the 1797 issue is about twice as rare as the 1796 coins, based on John Dannreuther's estimates of known examples, but both dates are highly sought and single-variety types. A solitary BD-1 die pair struck the entire 1796 mintage. The coin's 16-star obverse is attractively balanced with eight stars left and eight stars right. The reverse carried over to 1797 and features 11 Leaves on the branch beneath the Eagle's talons. These early ten dollar gold coins were the new nation's largest denomination and popular in commerce. In later years, the coins were used in foreign trade and were exported. But in 1795 to 1797 the low-mintage Small Eagle dates were among the earliest U.S. gold issues to circulate domestically. Relatively few examples were put aside and saved. This About Uncirculated 1796 shows signs of brief circulation, with a sharp strike and only minor circulation wear on the eagle's neck, breast, and leg feathers. The fields are partially prooflike and have a few tiny marks, but there no heavy contacts and abrasions are minimal. The orange-gold surfaces retain considerable luster throughout both the obverse and the reverse and the eye appeal is outstanding for the assigned grade. There are no adjustment marks to distract the eye. Given this coin's Choice surface quality and vibrant coloration, advanced type collectors and early gold specialists alike will be watching. Be sure to take full advantage of the bidding opportunity represented by this radiant and well-preserved 1796 Small Eagle ten dollar ...
