1907 $10 Wire Rim MS65 PCGS. The Wire Rim Indian eagle of 1907 represents the truest form of Augustus Saint-Gaudens' intended coin that collectors are able to acquire. This debut issue was technically struck in a pattern capacity, not intended for general circulation, and is listed in the Judd book as Judd-1901. The trial coinage amounted to 542 pieces, and most examples were distributed to various government officials, dignitaries, and other persons of importance. Per research by Roger Burdette, 70 examples remained after these distributions and were later destroyed, leaving a net mintage of 472 coins.      David Akers, in the John Jay Pittman catalog (Akers, 5/1998), wrote: {blockquote}"Almost immediately, 1907 Wire Edge Eagles were recognized by numismatists as rarities and valuable collector's items, and B. Max Mehl once noted (in his 1921 G.F.E. Wilharm sale catalogue) that, 'When first issued, this variety sold up to $75', a price well in excess of the value of most gold coins at that time other than a few famous rarities."{/blockquote}      Pittman, a master of acquiring rarities for seemingly trivial amounts, was able to purchase his "Choice Uncirculated" Wire Rim ten from the New Netherlands 26th sale (11/1948), lot 19, for $82.50. The coin realized $40,700 in the 1998 sale of the Pittman Collection.      Due to the terms of their distribution, a significant number of Wire Rim tens -- perhaps more than half of the net mintage -- survive today, mostly in Mint State. A few handfuls of circulated coins were likely carried as pocket pieces. Most Uncirculated examples grade in the MS64 and lower range. Gems are scarcely seen, and finer pieces are genuine rarities.      This coin is stunning on grounds of both technical and aesthetic appeal. The warm yellow-gold surfaces showcase thick, satiny luster with a nearly mattelike texture in the areas not exhibiting the usual swirling die striae.
