1850 $20 MS61 PCGS. CAC. As the first regular issue in the long-running Liberty Head double eagle series, the 1850 date is of unending demand from double eagle collectors and first-year-of-issue specialists. Vast amounts of gold traveled east from the California gold fields. The Philadelphia Mint received much of the gold shipped eastward, as witnessed by the 1850 double eagle mintage exceeding 1.1 million pieces. Chief engraver James B. Longacre produced several historic designs and patterns in 1849, the most important being his Liberty Head gold dollar and twenty dollar coins that would form the backbone of U.S. gold series. The centerpiece was the the double eagle -- then the largest regular denomination in American coinage, authorized by the Act of March 3, 1849. A single surviving 1849 pattern is held in the National Numismatic Collection in the Smithsonian Institution, allowing the 1850 double eagles to serve as the inaugural issue for the twenty dollar series. Luckily, a limited number of Mint State examples survive for this popular Type One issue and every Uncirculated appearance draws strong collector interest. This MS61 example with CAC endorsement is sure to catch the eye, since attractive Mint State pieces are scarce and in especially high demand in today's market. Attractive brassy-gold surfaces show scattered light marks but the fields are are lustrous and the motifs are sharply struck throughout the obverse and the reverse. Partial reflectivity survives beneath the myriad minor abrasions that dot the surfaces, but here are no individually prominent marks to mention. The average grade of a surviving 1851 double eagle is just under the AU50 level. This coin is far finer than that and is sure to find a welcoming home in an advanced double eagle set. PCGS Population: 34 in 61, 63 finer. CAC: 9 in 61, 10 finer (7/26). HID06601242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
