1851 $50 RE Humbert Fifty Dollar, Reeded Edge, 880 Thous. AU53 PCGS. K-5, R.4. The Reeded Edge was adopted after the Lettered Edge was deemed too labor intensive to produce, and design elements were adjusted to be included on the obverse die. While calls continued for smaller denomination gold coins by merchants, the iconic "slug" proved to be the unshakable denomination for California. This piece displays light yellow-gold luster with some deeper orange toning surrounding the devices. The strike is decent, though wear is present over the eagle's portrait as is the normal location for that to appear first. Surface abrasions are typical for the grade, and the eye appeal is quite pleasing. A planchet flaw on the first L in DOLLS serves as a pedigree marker. Among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins. Listed on pages 392 and 393 in the 2026 Guide Book. PCGS Population: 6 in 53, 24 finer (7/26). HID06601242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
