1794 50C O-101a, T-7, R.3, VF30 PCGS. Tompkins Die Stage 1/5. The 1794 O-101a, T-7 die marriage is attributed on the obverse by star 15 pointing just below the tip of the bust, while the reverse is identified by 10 berries on the left side of wreath, and 11 berries on the right side. As the first year issue for the half dollar denomination, 1794 fifty cent examples are always in high demand in all grade levels. The first delivery of 5,300 half dollars was on December 1, 1794, and the second delivery of 18,164 half dollars occurred on February 4, 1795, which has long been assumed to be all 1794 dated half dollars. The total 1794 mintage of 23,464 half dollars required eleven die pairs, as dies frequently failed from heavy die cracks which were often caused by "the precariousness and uncertainty of hardening and tempering the dies" as Chief Engraver Robert Scot explained in his early 1795 engraving report to Congress.      This is an excellent mid-circulated specimen, fully struck with ample detail remaining in the hair curls and wing feathers, along with complete dentilation. Attractively toned on the obverse in shades of golden gray with light blue accents, while the reverse has similar coloration with some areas of russet. Grade-consistent circulation marks are found on both sides. Light adjustment marks are seen on the reverse, which are common on Flowing Hair half dollars. The coin has lovely eye appeal and is a very nice representative of the first year of issue for half dollars from the early United States Mint. From The Silver Spring Collection.
