1796 $1 Large Date, Small Letters, B-5, BB-65, R.2, VF35 PCGS. Bowers Die State III. The slightly larger numerals are in the style of the 1797 dollars, although the increased digit sizes are not immediately obvious. The most prominent diagnostic for the obverse is the bold repunching visible on the 6 of the date. Another quick pickup is the broken lower right foot of the R in LIBERTY. On the reverse, the Small Letters legend includes a leaf tip ending beneath the A in STATES. The diagnostic die lump at I in AMERICA has begun its travel toward the adjacent C, although in this middle die state the large lump barely touches the C. The Choice VF surfaces still retain some muted luster over the attractive, silver-gray surfaces. S and T of STATES are somewhat weakly struck, as often seen on this popular 1796 die marriage.
