1840 $1 OC-3, R.3, AU58 NGC. Osburn-Cushing Die State a/a. The same dies were used to strike proofs and the fields are certainly mirrorlike beneath the attractive golden-gray toning with blue and violet undertones. The near-Mint coin shows subtle circulation wear and the stars are not pinpoint sharp, so the AU58 NGC grade is certainly understandable. Scattered small marks exist across the original, well-patinated surfaces. This is an attractive coin for the assigned grade with few marks and excellent eye appeal.
