1840-D $2 1/2 AU50 PCGS. Winter 1-A. The 1840-D is among the rarest of the Dahlonega quarter eagles with a meager mintage of just 3,532 coins. The issue is extremely rare in Mint State with only four examples reported between both PCGS and NGC. Less than 100 pieces are known between both services and overlap between the graded examples is highly probable. Doug Winter estimates only between 60 to 80 surviving coins. Examples of Winter 1-A at this grade level and finer are seldom seen and we have handled only five pieces graded at least AU50 within the past 10 years (7/26).      This About Uncirculated example displays rich coppery-orange surfaces on a typical network of die cracks that characterize the Winter 1-A variety. Luster traces appear in the protected spaces and most devices are delicately bordered in lilac and rose hues. Trivial marks are as expected for the grade and Liberty has a couple of small ticks on the cheek. The strike is typical for the 1840-D, showing better details on the obverse and light-to-moderate wear on the reverse high points. This AU50 is remarkably free of any significant distractions and eye appeal is bright and delightful. PCGS Population: 11 in 50, 12 finer (7/26).
