1808 $5 Wide 5D, BD-4, High R.3, AU55 PCGS. CAC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/"b" which is unlisted in the Bass-Dannreuther reference book but had been discovered and documented previously by Heritage catalogers. This rare late die state has a strongly clashed reverse which includes the outline of Miss Liberty's cap on the lower reverse, along with the date clashed through ATES of STATES. The reverse die was evidently lapped for the next and final usage on 1809/8 BD-1. Attribution of the 1808 BD-4 Capped Bust Left five dollar is from a non-overdated obverse and a widely spaced 5D on the reverse. This is a very attractive representative of the 1808 Wide 5D gold half eagle, with rich tangerine toning evenly blanketing both sides. Frosty luster radiates from sheltered areas of the coin, including throughout the obverse stars and reverse legend. Trivial circulation marks are toned-over and commensurate with the Choice AU grade. The strike is strong with central devices well detailed, and just a touch of softness on the right side obverse rim. The overall presentation is outstanding, and this wonderful early gold coin has rightly been approved by CAC for quality. From The Silver Spring Collection.
