1839/8 $10 Large Letters, Head of 1838, AU55 PCGS. Green-gold coloration dominates the surfaces of this 1839/8 Large Letters eagle, save for some faint hints of tangerine around the letters of LIBERTY and some deeper hues in the protected areas. All devices on both sides are exquisitely defined. The 1839 Large Letters eagle is one of two issues of the first design type of Liberty Head eagles. It uses a unique obverse hub with a larger section of hair under the headband that covers the ear almost completely, as well as a significantly more angled bust. The date is also placed under the bust ending, and is not centered under the bust like in later issues, throwing off the balance of the design. Bowers suggests that this issue was, "considered to be clumsy or less than artistic," causing its replacement in October 1839 with the head that was used for the rest of the series. Examples of either issue of this first design type are very rare in Mint State, with just a handful of examples known of each. Therefore, high-quality Choice AU coins like the present offering represent the ideal choice for the gold collector. HID06601242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
