1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim, AU55 PCGS. CAC. The Saint-Gaudens double eagle design is often remarked as one of the most beautiful U.S. coin designs and is readily sought after by collectors. The High-Relief examples were struck in a somewhat unpractical manner akin to medals, with multiple die impressions per coin that caused some planchet metal to squeeze between the dies and the collar, creating a Wire Rim on each side. The "knife" rim caused stacking problems and was remedied later in the coinage of High Relief double eagles. This particular Wire Rim example retains significant portions of its satiny mint luster with occasional breaks in the fields and over the highest portions of the design. This upper-end appearance is confirmed by the CAC endorsement. The strike is strong throughout and there is some very minor weakness over the highest points of the high-relief design. While there is a healthy survivorship for and above the present coin's grade, this will make an exceptional collector-grade piece for series collectors.
