1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim, MS63 PCGS. Coinage of High Relief Saint-Gaudens double eagles was suspended at 12,367 pieces, and the issue was replaced by a low-relief version intended to make the coins strike up with a single die impression. At the time, multiple die impressions were needed for the High Relief coins to be produced, creating problems for mass coinage efficiency. The High Relief coins were intended for circulation, although many never served that purpose, instead being gathered up by collectors and art aficionados seeking to own a piece of the late Augustus Saint-Gaudens' handiwork. Despite the low mintage, High Relief double eagles remain readily collectible since much of the mintage was saved. However, high-grade pieces quickly climb out of reach for most collectors. This Select example is a pleasing balance of quality, eye appeal, and grade. A bold strike complements natural honey-gold luster, while only a few small marks are apparent on each side.
