1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim, MS64 PCGS. The September 5, 1948 issue of The Sunday Star, printed a long article of appreciation for Augustus Saint-Gaudens' artistic works, entitled "Centennial Year of Great Sculptor Spurs Interest in Works Here." One segment of the article read: {blockquote}"In four decades of his career, Saint-Gaudens modeled 147 figures, busts and bas-reliefs, some of which are not only an important part of the Nation's art heritage but have gotten into the life of the people to the extent of calling forth folk sayings and witticism (e.g., the equestrian statue of Gen. Sherman preceded by the figure of Victory--'Just like a Yankee, to let the lady walk.'"{/blockquote} Such a tongue-in-cheek quip might not so easily be applied to Saint-Gaudens' figure of Liberty on the double eagle, which was modeled after the figure of Victory from the Sherman Monument. Here, Liberty strides forward in the manner of Victory but unaccompanied, save for by the torch she carries, the olive branch she bears, and the rising sun illuminating her silhouette. Perhaps no other coin design captured as bold a depiction of the American spirit. The current Choice Mint State High Relief double eagle yields vibrant honey-gold mint luster and bold definition of the design, with no bothersome abrasions. Eye appeal simply delights, as does the design itself on this, widely considered the most beautiful coin ever struck for circulation by the U.S. Mint. Among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins.
