Delaware June 1, 1759 10s PMG Very Fine 25 Net. A total of 6,000 10 Shillings notes were allocated for issue as part of the emission of £27,000 in Bills of Credit authorized by Act of May 7, 1759. This type has long been a favorite with collectors due to its improbable vignette of a menagerie including a squirrel, bird, and an elephant on the back. The choice of an elephant as a vignette subject is curious and unexplained. The arrival of a live elephant in the United States did not occur until 1796, 37 years later. The note has seen time in circulation with a paper tape repair on the back and evidence of being previously mounted. Almost all design elements are clear (the bottom of the nature print is obscured on the back) and the signatures of William Armstrong, John Barns, and David Hall are legible.
