New York September 2, 1775 $10 PMG Extremely Fine 40. As part of an emission of $112,500 authorized by the Resolve of September 2, 1775, 5,000 $10 notes were allocated for issue. The design features the New York City coat of arms on the face and an amazingly incongruous vignette of an elephant with the motto PAR VIRIBUS VIRTUS (Virtue equal to men) on the back. The first live elephant did not arrive in the United States until 1796, two decades later.
