New York January 6, 1776 (Water Works) 2s PMG About Uncirculated 50. Considered the first paper money issued by an American city, these "Water Works" notes issued by New York City feature a vignette of the proposed steam operated water pump designed by Christopher Colles for the project, which was never completed due to the British occupation of New York during the Revolutionary War. The note is printed on an odd bonded paper "sandwich," with dark rough paper paired with more commonly seen lighter bank note paper. This note is from the third of four water works emissions made by the city between 1774 and 1776, with 2,500 2 Shillings notes authorized for issue.
