North Carolina April 4, 1748 £3 PMG Very Fine 20 Net. Just 2,000 £3 Bills of Credit were authorized for issue as part of this 1748 emission. The £3 note was the largest denomination placed in circulation and featured a vignette of Fort Johnston and the Union Jack. The fort was authorized by the colonial governor in 1745 and three decades later was burned to the ground on July 18, 1775, by the colonial militia as one of the first actions of the Revolutionary War. The note has been severed and reattached and has other more minor repairs and pinholes. Somewhat surprisingly, only one other example of the thirteen pieces currently listed in the PMG Population Report for this design has a higher grade, with the majority of the notes having single digit or low double digit grades.
