Pennsylvania April 10, 1775 £5 PMG Choice About Unc 58 EPQ. The emission authorized by the Act of March 18, 1775 was intended to fund the construction of jails and correctional institutions. Appropriately, this note depicts the variously named Walnut Street Workhouse/Prison/Jail which served as the Philadelphia jail, accepting its first prisoners in 1776. The issue comprised only two denominations: 50s and £5. Even after 250+ years since it was printed, the note is still striking, displaying vibrant red design details that are well printed on bright paper with eight excellent margins. Since there were only three signers, we know that the faded red ink signature is that of Lindsay Coats since the other two signatures are dark and bold, being those of Job Bacon and Edward Roberts.
