ANTIQUITIES. Roman Imperial. Severan Dynasty (ca. AD late 2nd century-early 3rd century). Heliotrope intaglio (26mm x 17mm). As made. Face engraved with four portraits of the Severan Dynasty: Septimius Severus, laureate and cuirassed, seen from behind, and Julia Domna, draped, seen from front, both facing left (on right), Caracalla, laureate, draped, and cuirassed, seen from behind, and Geta, draped, seen from front, both facing right (on left) / Blank. Cf. Classical Numismatic Group, Triton XXII (8 January 2019), lot 1125 for similar specimen without Julia Domna. The date of this incredible dynastic intaglio can be narrowed down based on the portraiture of the two sons - Caracalla is shown with a full beard and Geta is nearly an adult, but bare-headed. As such, this familial snapshot was likely engraved between AD 208-209, while Geta was still Caesar. SOLD AS IS, NO RETURNS. HID07901242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
