The "Longevity Tael" stands as one of the most enigmatic and captivating issues in Chinese numismatics. Notably, it represents the only machine-struck commemorative coin produced under the Qing Dynasty — a distinction that alone secures its place among the most important rarities of the series. The origins of this extraordinary issue remain shrouded in mystery, with no known references appearing in Chinese literature prior to 1939.
Scholars have long debated the purpose behind its striking. Some attribute its creation to 1894, commemorating the 60th birthday of the Empress Dowager, while the prevailing view — supported by noted researcher E. Kann — places its origin in 1904, marking her 70th birthday. Additional theories persist, further enhancing the mystique surrounding this remarkable pattern issue.
The present specimen was certified during the inaugural Shanghai PCGS grading event in July 2013, an occasion of considerable significance in the modern Chinese numismatic market. It is believed that only 10 to 12 examples of the Longevity Tael survive today, of which merely seven have been confirmed. The majority reside in prominent institutional collections, leaving very few available to private collectors. Two minor varieties are known, with the present example representing the scarcer variant.
Its distinguished pedigree further elevates its importance. This specimen can be traced through several of the most celebrated collections in the field, including those of E. Kann, Eli Wallit, the Chang Foundation, Chen Gi Mao, and CC Collection.
Opportunities to acquire a specimen of such profound rarity and historical intrigue are exceedingly rare. Combining absolute scarcity, rich provenance, and enduring symbolism — embodying the universal aspiration for “Longevity” — this coin is not only a cornerstone of advanced collections but is also a visually striking masterpiece worthy of the finest cabinets.
This coin will be part of Hosane's Auction May 10, 2026, sale in Shanghai.
